Transit Creative Project:
A Community's Celebration
of Dance!

Every holiday season, Transit Creative Project brings together high school aged dancers, choreographers, and an entire community for a stunning dance production like no other.

Now in its sixth year, the program operates in both metro Melbourne and a regional city each school holiday period. The project's uniqueness lies in its four-day program, where the participants collaborate with leading choreographers to generate a full-scale production. The grand finale comes together as a fully-realised show held in a theatre, inviting the community to join in the celebration of the talents and efforts of these impressive young artists.

What began as a modest start in the country town of Traralgon has now grown into a renowned program, with Transit Creative Project running each year in multiple towns across Australia. The project's steady increase in popularity serves as evidence of the program's effectiveness and value in impacting the communities involved.

Jayden Hicks, the co-founder and associate director of Transit Dance, expressed his pride in the Transit Creative Project's success. “I couldn't be prouder of the success that the Transit Creative Project has achieved in such a short time,  including being nominated for an Australian Dance Award in 2019. Our success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our young dancers, teachers, and staff. I'm excited for what the future holds for the Transit Creative Project and the countless opportunities it will offer for future young dancers to grow in their passion and art.”

Central to the success of the Transit Creative Project is the experience of the participants. For some, this program has been a stepping stone towards a career in dance, while for others, it has been a transformative experience that has helped them develop lifelong skills. The program inspires confidence and resilience, and it provides young people with the tools they need to navigate life's challenges both on and off the stage.

Sarah, a previous participant in the Transit Creative Project, emphasises the life-changing effect the program had on her. "I have gained so much valuable experience and training from the program, as well as made lifelong friends with other dancers who share the same passion as me. The project has also helped me to build my confidence, both as a dancer and as a person, and has given me a sense of belonging in a supportive community. I'm grateful for the opportunities the Transit Creative Project has given me and excited to see where my dance journey takes me next."

The program's all-inclusive policy guarantees that high school-aged dancers from all backgrounds and skill levels are welcomed to participate in the Transit Creative Project. The program encourages diversity of perspective and creativity in its workshops, leading to extensive innovation and individuality in each production. The program challenges participants while providing them with the necessary support to succeed.

“As a parent, seeing my child's growth and development through the Transit Creative Project has been incredible," says Lisa, whose daughter has participated in the program. "Not only have her dance skills improved, but she has also developed important life skills, such as teamwork, discipline, and time management. I appreciate the supportive and nurturing environment that the project provides for young dancers, as well as the opportunities for them to showcase their talents and creativity.”

The next exciting instalment of the Creative Project returns to Melbourne June 25 to 28, followed by a Regional Creative Project in Warragul July 1 to 5. Both events will be led by highly-esteemed choreographers Lachlan Hall and Jayden Hicks and are guaranteed to provide young dancers with an exceptional opportunity to gain professional experience, accelerate their skills, and join a supportive and thriving community.
