Fresh Energy and Remarkable Talent: OPUS returns
The new cast onstage in OPUS
In 2022, Transit Dance debuted OPUS, a captivating contemporary dance piece choreographed by the talented Jayden Hicks. Set to the mesmerising compositions of Vivaldi, this performance, featuring six dancers, received high acclaim. Fast forward to 2023, and OPUS was revitalised through a restaging, captivating audiences in Warragul , Shepparton and Melbourne.
Reflecting on the remount, Hicks shared, "Bringing 'OPUS' back in 2023 was a special moment. It allowed us to breathe new life into the piece and collaborate with a fresh cast. By combining experienced alumni with current students from Transit Dance, we aimed to showcase the extraordinary talent and versatility of our dancers. It was an exciting opportunity to infuse the work with a dynamic and revitalized spirit."
This new version of OPUS was part of Transit's Regional Creative Project, an annual initiative that takes place in various regions of Victoria during school holidays. This project offers young dancers the chance to collaborate with renowned contemporary choreographers, creating a new 20-minute performance for their communities. Alongside this, Transit Dance Company also presents a professional dance work, which, in 2023, was the esteemed "OPUS."
Hicks emphasized the importance of providing role models for young students, stating, "It's crucial for these students to have inspiring figures to aspire to. When they see dancers who were once in their shoes and are now performing in a professional production, it ignites their own aspirations. Additionally, bringing contemporary dance to regional areas provides a wonderful opportunity to share this art form with a wider audience."
OPUS received tremendous acclaim and garnered praise from audiences of all ages. The new cast, featuring alumni Alex Macnab, Alexander Soh, Jack Birdseye, Angelica Menta, Paris Robinson, and Molly Haringsma, brought their unique interpretations to the piece, infusing it with fresh energy.
"The technical skill of the dancers was simply breathtaking. Their precision and control were remarkable." One audience member shared, "The emotional depth portrayed by the dancers was truly captivating. You could feel every emotion resonating through their movements." Many praised the cast for their remarkable stage presence, with one viewer stating, "The dancers commanded the stage with such confidence and grace. It was a mesmerizing experience."
The journey of OPUS from its debut to its triumphant return exemplifies the artistic brilliance and training excellence upheld by Transit Dance. The restaging allowed a new cast to breathe new life into the piece, showcasing their talent and versatility. This success not only highlights the transformative power of dance but also emphasizes the impact of collaboration and mentorship. With each performance, Transit Dance continues to push the boundaries of contemporary dance and inspire the next generation of dancers.
