Welcome from the Artistic Director

Tonight is about stepping into the work and committing fully to the possibilities of performance.

Our second-year Musical Theatre students share a studio workshop presentation of The Witches of Eastwick, embracing the heightened world, characters and storytelling of the work. Our first-year Musical Theatre artists bring their own energy to the stage through cabaret performance, while our second and third year Performing Arts students present self-devised solos that place their individual ideas and artistic choices at the centre.

Tonight also sees our second-year Performing Arts students take the stage in STAR, a new ensemble work I have had the pleasure of creating with them.

What connects these works is a willingness to commit, to an idea, a character, a physical choice or a moment on stage. Training provides our students with tools and technique, but it is what they choose to do with those tools that begins to define them as artists.

It has been a privilege to watch these students continue to find that confidence and ownership.

15. Second Year Performing Arts (Group Work) Title: Star

    Description: STAR explores the evolution of female stardom, drawing on ideas of presence, power and ownership.Beginning with a modern take on the glamour and spectacle of classic MGM, the work references the iconic image of the female star before shifting towards a contemporary expression of femininity. STAR celebrates the strength, confidence and unapologetic self-ownership of the modern woman, moving from an image created to be admired to one defined on her own terms.

   Description: In the seemingly quiet town of Eastwick, three women, Alexandra, Jane and Sukie, find themselves frustrated by the expectations and limitations of their lives. When the mysterious and charismatic Darryl Van Horne arrives in town, their worlds are quickly turned upside down.

   What begins as an intoxicating discovery of confidence, desire and unexpected power soon becomes something far more dangerous. As Darryl’s influence grows, the women must confront the consequences of what they have unleashed and ultimately discover the strength they hold together.

   Darkly comic, mischievous and larger than life, The Witches of Eastwick explores desire, female friendship, power, conformity and liberation through a heightened theatrical world.

   Our Musical Theatre students present an abridged rehearsal-room version of the musical, with production elements stripped back to place the focus on performance, character and ensemble storytelling.
