Welcome from the Artistic Director

As The Artists draws to a close, tonight gives us one final opportunity to turn our attention to the people at the centre of it all: our students.

Across the program, our Musical Theatre and Performing Arts artists move between individual expression and ensemble performance. Our second and third year Performing Arts students share self-devised solos, placing their own creative voices on stage, while our first-year Musical Theatre students bring together music, personality and storytelling through their cabaret performances.

We also share two ensemble works created by Transit alumna Isabelle Grozdanovski and myself. These works connect different generations and stages of the Transit journey, from artists beginning their training to graduates developing their professional practice and those of us fortunate enough to contribute to their development along the way.

The Artists is ultimately about creating space for young people to make, perform, experiment and be seen. Not every question needs to be answered and not every artistic identity needs to be fully formed. What matters is having the opportunity to begin.

  1. First Year Performing Arts (Group Work) Title: Neon Confessions

    Choreographer: Isabelle Grozdanovski

    Description: This high-energy 10-minute performance reimagines the bold spirit of the 80s through a fresh, contemporary lens. Bursting with attitude, confidence, and nostalgia, the piece celebrates the vibrant culture and individuality that defined the decade. Driven by Bronski Beat’s electrifying music,  dynamic footwork, powerful formations, and theatrical performance, combine to create vibrant performance that honours the past while bringing it to life for today’s audience.

  2. Second Year Performing Arts (Group Work) Title: Star

    Choreographer: Jayden Hicks

    Description: STAR explores the evolution of female stardom, drawing on ideas of presence, power and ownership.Beginning with a modern take on the glamour and spectacle of classic MGM, the work references the iconic image of the female star before shifting towards a contemporary expression of femininity. STAR celebrates the strength, confidence and unapologetic self-ownership of the modern woman, moving from an image created to be admired to one defined on her own terms.
