Karen Malek is a highly respected leader in dance education, with over 45 years of experience shaping the next generation of dancers and educators. As Director of Education at Transit Dance, she plays a pivotal role in developing innovative training programs that equip students with the skills, knowledge, and industry insight to excel in both performance and teaching careers.
Karen’s influence extends beyond Transit Dance. She previously served as President of the Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD) and ATOD International from 2007 to 2017, where she was instrumental in modernising dance curricula and introducing new training systems, including contemporary, hip-hop, and early childhood dance programs. Her outstanding contribution to the dance industry was recognised in 2020 when she was awarded the Australian Dance Award for Services to Dance.
A graduate of The Australian Ballet School Teachers’ Course, Karen has trained extensively in classical ballet, contemporary, character, and repertoire. She has examined dance disciplines across Australia and internationally and has been an adjudicator for over 20 years. Her former students have gone on to successful careers as professional dancers, choreographers, educators, and industry leaders, with many working in world-renowned companies.
With multiple qualifications in dance teaching, management, and curriculum development, Karen continues to drive innovation in dance education. Her commitment to excellence and industry advancement makes her an invaluable mentor to both aspiring dancers and educators at Transit Dance.
